Cheryl Cole to throw alcohol-free Christmas lunch

London: Former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole is throwing an alcohol free pre-Christmas party for her bandmates Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh and Sarah Harding.

The 28-year-old `Fight for This Love` singer will take charge of cooking but has taken booze off the menu because of Harding`s recent stint in rehab, where she received treatment for alcoholism and depression, reported Sun online.

"Cheryl is going all out. She has already ordered all the food and is determined to cook everything herself. She`s doing the full works, turkey with all the trimmings, and the lunch table will be laid with crackers and other traditional Christmas decorations," a source said.

"But with Sarah having just left rehab, Cheryl doesn`t want to make it into a drunken dinner so isn`t planning on having any wine involved. It`s just a chance for the girls to catch up with each other before Christmas," the source added.

It is unclear if fifth member Nadine Coyle will be back in London from Los Angeles, where she is now based, in time for Cole`s festive fun.

Liz Taylor’s dog ate her $11.8m pearl!

New York: Elizabeth Taylor’s dog almost ate her world-famous La Peregrina pearl — which sold at auction this past week for a record 11.8 million dollars —just moments after she got it as a Valentine’s gift from husband Richard Burton.

“Twenty minutes after she put it on, she lost it,” the New York Post quoted Ward Landrigan, the former head of Sotheby’s jewelry division who sold the 55.95-carat pearl to Burton for 37,000 dollars in 196, as saying.

After Burton bought the bauble for Taylor, Landrigan travelled from New York to Las Vegas, where he was picked up in a white Rolls- Royce at the airport to deliver the precious cargo to the glamorous couple at a Caesars Palace suite “the size of three tennis courts.”

“They asked what I wanted to drink,” recalled Landrigan, who’d sold Burton the 33.19-carat Krupp diamond a year earlier.

“I asked what they were having, and they said salty dogs, which is vodka and clam juice,” he stated.

Landrigan presented the pearl and was chatting with Burton while Taylor left to try it on. She “came back running, showing her cleavage and saying, ‘Ward! I’ve lost the pearl!’

“The room had pink shag carpeting, and I was crawling past a settee when I saw one of [Taylor’s] two Lhasa apsos, and I heard the crunch. I said, ‘Liz, I know where the pearl is,’ ” Landrigan revealed.

The pampered pooch apparently wanted the treasure for a quick snack.

Landrigan, who owns fine-jewellery company Verdura, says Liz grabbed the dog and put her hand into its mouth.

“She got the dog to spit it out. I was afraid it cracked because pearls do,” he told us, adding that it suffered only a couple of scratches.

Taylor then had Cartier make a diamond-and-ruby necklace for the pearl.

The full piece was auctioned this past week at Christie’s and sold to an anonymous buyer.

Chef creates Christmas menu for cancer patients

London: Jim Fisher has created a special Christmas menu for people undergoing cancer treatment who can’t enjoy a traditional meal during the holiday season.

Fisher, a Master Chef semi-finalist, had nursed his late mother Sylvia as she fought a rare form of cancer.

The chemotherapy used for cancer treatment can trigger debilitating side effects such as nausea and loss of appetite, and a wrecking of taste buds.

Meanwhile, mouth ulcers – which occur due to the strain placed on the immune system during chemotherapy – can make it painful to eat at a time when the body most needs nutrition.

Seeing his mother’s loss of appetite and inability to enjoy most foods due to inflammation of the surface of the inside of the mouth, Fisher began to research food properties and modified his mother’s old recipes.

“Cancer treatment is so distressing but it dawned on me that there was something I could do,” the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

“And that was to try to make Mum food that would help her maintain her strength and yet still be palatable,” he said.

“It was a matter of trial and error – if she said something was too hot or too sweet, we’d modify various well-liked recipes. With her help, I created a Christmas menu I hope will be enjoyable for everyone,” he added.

Sylvia died in July 1998 but Fisher hopes his menu will be part of her legacy and help people through a difficult time.

“Food is more than about having something to eat. It takes you through the bad times. Going through chemo is rotten enough as it is, but it’s often especially bad at Christmas,” he said.

“I want people to feel part of it all. I hope these recipes make it a merrier and more palatable Christmas for those battling cancer,” he added.

Companies turning to social media to boost workplace productivity

Washington: Global and competitive businesses are turning to social media to bridge distances and build relationships with its customers and employees, a new study has revealed.

Savvy companies, both large and small, have recognized the value social media can bring to their organizations, something that employees and customers are expecting more and more.

“It is totally reshaping the way organizations communicate,” says Andrea Goldberg, the president and founder of Digital Culture Consulting, LLC in Bedford, NY, and an industrial and organizational psychologist with a background in marketing, communications and human resources.

“Increased openness and collaboration are greatly impacting the workplace and leading to the creation of internal and external networks and communities.”

“Driving much of this is the relatively new phenomenon of social media, which is also contributing to organizational effectiveness, branding and customer support,” Goldberg said.

A 2010 Burson Marsteller study of Fortune 100 companies found that 66 percent used Twitter; 54 percent had a Facebook page and half managed a corporate YouTube channel.

And, according to another survey, 73 percent of businesses plan to increase their social media presence, while 90 percent of marketers have adopted social media as a valuable tool.

“A new business environment is emerging as many employees have the ability and the desire to use these tools to interact with their colleagues, managers and customers and to accomplish work differently than by traditional methods.”

Goldberg sees organizations transforming and shifting strategies because of the way social media is impacting recruiting and selection, communications, rewards and incentives, defining job roles and leadership and training and development.

She said that some of the positive outcomes stemming from these realities include new marketing and public relations channels; better customer acquisition, service and loyalty; new approaches for branding and communications; collaborative innovations for product development; opportunities for thought leadership; recruitment of hard-to-find skilled candidates and increased employee engagement.

Mould in Christmas trees could make you ill

London: Traditional pine needle trees could be behind a list of seasonal health complaints including tiredness, wheezing and even insomnia, scientists have suggested.

Christmas Tree Syndrome is caused by mould spores and was discovered after scientists investigated a peak in breathing problems during December.

Experts examined clippings from 28 trees, including needles and bark and found 53 cases of mould.

Victims complained of a host of symptoms including fatigue, chest pains, sinus congestion, itchy nose and shortness of breath.

It is believed some forms of the mould can also trigger life- threatening conditions like pneumonia and bronchitis.

Good news is that Dr Lawrence Kurlandsky, who led the research, has suggested ways to enjoy a tree without risking your health.

“Firstly, hose down your tree in the garden and leave it to dry before bringing it inside,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

“Then remove it swiftly after Christmas Day, long before the traditional Twelfth Night,” he added.

Christmas party hangovers to cost economy £242m loss in productivity

London: Boozy nights on Christmas will adversely impact workplace routine and the next morning hangovers will cost the economy 242 million pounds loss in productivity as one in four workers will plan a day off to recover, a new study has revealed.

The research divulged that more than half of those who attend an office do would most likely have a sore head the next morning.
12 percent of these will be late or won’t make it in at all. A fifth of those who do make it in will only work an insignificant four-hour day.

The research, from online travel retailer lastminute.com, stated that 55 per cent of employees would get drunk at their Christmas party.

And a quarter will kiss a colleague while a fifth will sleep with one. Other social gaffes include embarrassing dancing, spreading gossip, confessing feelings for a colleague, arguing or being kicked out of the party, the Daily Mail reported.

“Everyone loves a work Christmas party but sometimes the outcome can be more than a sore head,” Eva Bojtos, from lastminute.com, said.

Woman fired from job ‘for being pregnant’

London: A woman working at a nuclear arms factory has said that she was fired because she told her bosses of her pregnancy.

Jennifer Cox alleged that she lost her job as a result of morning sickness after deciding ‘honesty was the best policy’ and telling her bosses she was expecting a child.

Cox, 33, had worked for the Ministry of Defence police at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston, Berkshire, as its website manager in charge of updating information on the base’s intranet.

She had been hired on a part-time basis and within five weeks of the start of her job, she told bosses she was pregnant and began taking time off due to morning sickness and attending antenatal appointments.

This delayed progress on the website’s development and as a result, she said her line manager Ray Cross had a ‘threatening conversation’ with her.

“He just told me to stop going off sick… I didn’t want to be sick, I couldn’t help it,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“The threatening and intimidating conversation left me leaving work feeling very miserable and low,” she said.

She is charging her bosses with unfair dismissal due to sexual discrimination.

Cox told the tribunal panel that when she informed her superiors of her condition it led to her newly formed job becoming ‘at risk’.

“I had made the decision to notify my line manager, thinking that honesty was the best policy, which I now regret,” she said.

Martin Downs, representing the MoD, said Cross was not angry at her for missing work because of her sickness.

“This was not with focus on absence in mind… all Mr Cross was concerned about was the output on the intranet,” Downs said.

Her employment with the MoD ended on July 12, 2010. She had been employed on a six-month short-term casual contract for three days a week.

Cox said she was led to believe it would become permanent position.

However, that appeared to have changed several months later, the tribunal was told.

“Mr Cross told me that if things didn’t start to develop on the intranet soon he would have no option other than to end my contract and remind me that my contribution to the business was being evaluated while on a casual contract,” she said.

The case was adjourned with a reserved conclusion from Judge Robin Lewis expected in the New Year.

Former Miss Venezuela dies at 28

Caracas: Former Miss Venezuela Eva Ekvall died in Houston after fighting breast cancer since last year, her representatives said. She was 28.

"Sadly, cancer had the last word," writer Leonardo Padron told Globovision.

Ekvall, an actress and news anchor, died Saturday after "demonstrating extraordinary calm and courage in her fight against cancer," Padron said, without confirming whether the body would be sent home to Venezuela.

The former beauty queen wrote a book after being diagnosed with breast cancer last year and tried to raise awareness of the disease.

"Now I know what it feels like to not have a hair on your head," she said in a Twitter posting March 10.

In Venezuela, "we invest a lot of money in looking beautiful and not in health care", the former model said.

Well-known photographer Roberto Mata worked with Ekvall to chronicle her fight against cancer in the book "Fuera de Foco".

UK man buys world’s most expensive dessert after getting dumped

Melbourne: A heartbroken diamond merchant brought himself the world’s most expensive dessert, a pudding worth 33,500, after his girlfriend broke up with him.

Carl Weininger said that the pudding was his ‘pick me up’ after his three-year relationship ended.

The chocolate-laced pudding was styled like a Faberge egg and its list of ingredients included edible gold, champagne and caviar.

It contained a gold bracelet and spoon set and the cherry on top was a two-carat diamond.

Weininger took the pudding to the Aviators’ Ball, at the Sofitel Hotel at London’s Heathrow airport, where lucky guests sampled the luxury dessert.

“Buying the dessert was a real boost for my morale… I was dumped earlier this year and felt this could be a decent pick-me-up,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.

“I’m not much of a chocolate lover myself but all the women who tasted it said ‘Wow’. It was absolutely delicious, as you would expect,” he said

The pudding’s maker is expecting to be recognised by Guinness World Records having smashed the previous record, which cost a mere 18,000 dollars.

Fun night-outs with colleagues boosts teamwork

London: Socialising after office hours with colleagues can serve as a good morale booster for employees, give way to teamwork and also help developing trust and camaraderie, a new study has suggested.

On an average, employees in Britain attend three official work functions a year, the Daily Express reported.

In the poll of 2,000 UK workers, 60 percent admitted that they worked harder in the build-up to a business bash, to feel they have earned it.

Four in 10 were eager to find out what their teammates were ‘really’ like, and had more fun than they expected with colleagues.

“Offices can suffer a lot from internal politics or people who don’t make the effort to connect,” Ian Cowley said.

“It’s good to see that getting to know our co- workers impacts positively on our performance and that a fun office can actually be more productive,” Cowley added.

‘Kolaveri Di’ takes Internet by storm!

Mumbai: It’s nonsensical and uses broken English for lyrics yet India can’t stop listening to ‘Kolaveri Di.’

Apparently, the catchy tune of ‘Kolaveri Di’, which literally means ‘Killer Rage’ has captured the imagination of the nation and went on to register more than 11 million views on YouTube.

Sung by matinee idol Rajinikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush for his upcoming flick ‘3’, the Tamglish (a mix of Tamil and English) song is about a guy who has been dumped by his girlfriend.

Talking to a daily, Anirudh Ravichander, the music director of ‘Kolaveri Di’ said, “We all expected it to be a hit but not the kind of rage that it has become today.”

New Delhi: Celebs are known to be quirky but to boast of it has remained in the domain of a select few. The latest to join the club is ‘Prince of Good Times’ Siddharth Mallya who ‘for the sake of trying out local cuisine’ ate the heart of a Cobra in Vietnam and that too while it was still beating!

Deepika Padukone’s beau wrote on microblogging website Twitter: “Just ate the heart of a cobra while it was STILL beating!! They cut it out of its body in front of us..also had the blood mixed with coke!!(sic)”

“The blood was mixed with a bit of coke so has a sweet tang to it, and the actual snake meet tasted like marrow...(sic),” he added.

Mallya Jr’s boasting about his culinary adventure evinced sharp response from the Twitterrati with majority slamming him for the act but there were few who wanted more details.

Most people ‘feel less inclined to date’ pet owners!

London: Owning a pet is a big turn off for most of the people, especially if it is a snake, rat, ferret or spider, which could hamper the love life of singletons, a new study has suggested.

But the YouGov poll has revealed that hamsters or guinea pigs will do the least harm to a man or woman’s romantic prospects - if they really wish to have a pet.

Only 10 per cent of women and 13 per cent of men would run a mile if they knew their potential love interest owned a hamster, the Daily Mail reported.

The poll took into consideration 513 people on their dating preferences for craigslist.com, a listings and dating website.

They found that the dating advantage of owning a hamster or guinea-pig compared to, for example, cats or dogs, is considerable – especially so for women.

Nearly three times as many men (28 per cent) would ‘feel less inclined to date’ someone who they learnt was a dog-owner as the number (10 per cent) who would feel the same about a hamster or guinea-pig-owner.

More than half of single women (53 per cent) would feel less inclined towards dating someone who they learnt had an eight-legged friend.

Almost as many women would cool at the idea of dating someone who owned a snake (46 per cent), a rat (44 per cent) or even a ferret (34 per cent).

“Single folks who want to own a pet, but deter the fewest potential dates, should opt for a hamster or guinea-pig,” said Jim Buckmaster, CEO of craigslist.

Of course, to stand the best chance of finding a partner it might be worth ditching pets altogether.

Almost three-quarters (72 per cent) of those questioned said animals would determine their decision to whether or not to date someone.

Washington: Humble leaders are more effective and better liked by their subordinates, a new study has found.

Bradley Owens and co-author David Hekman, assistant professor of management at the Lubar School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, asked 16 CEOs, 20 mid-level leaders and 19 front-line leaders to describe in detail how humble leaders operate in the workplace and how a humble leader behaves differently than a non-humble leader.

Although the leaders were from vastly different organizations like military, manufacturing, health care, financial services, retailing and religious, they all agreed that the essence of leader humility involves modelling to followers how to grow.

“Growing and learning often involves failure and can be embarrassing,” Owens said.

“But leaders who can overcome their fears and broadcast their feelings as they work through the messy internal growth process will be viewed more favourably by their followers. They also will legitimise their followers’ own growth journeys and will have higher-performing organizations,” he said.

The researchers found that such leaders model how to be effectively human rather than superhuman and legitimize “becoming” rather than “pretending”.

However, the study also found that some humble leaders were more effective than others.

Humble leaders who were young, non-white or female were reported as having to constantly prove their competence to followers, making their humble behaviours both more expected and less valued. However, humble leaders who were experienced white males were reported as reaping large benefits from humbly admitting mistakes, praising followers and trying to learn.

In contrast, female leaders often feel they are expected to show more humility than their male counterparts, but then they have their competence called into question when they do show humility.

“Our results suggest that female leaders often experience a ‘double bind.

“They are expected to be strong leaders and humble females at the same time,” he said.

The study will be published in the Academy of Management Journal.

How Flipkart broke India`s online shopping inertia

New Delhi: It was meant to be a portal that compared different e-commerce websites, only there weren`t enough of them in the first place to be compared. Thus was born Flipkart, making sure that online shopping would never be the same again in India.

From a two-member embryonic idea to a 4,500-member company, the Flipkart story is not just about stupendous success and mind-numbing numbers. Much more than that, it`s about redefining customer experience and breaking online shopping inertia.

Started in 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal -- both from the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT) and with prior experience in Amazon -- the Bangalore-based firm ships close to 30,000 items per day.

Or, in other words, 20 products per minute.

"We are clocking daily sales of Rs.2.5 crore ($ 0.5 mn). Our growth rate has been 100 percent quarter on quarter," Sachin Bansal, CEO of Flipkart, told IANS.

But the interesting part is that around 60 percent of Flipkart`s orders are cash or card on delivery.

"Indian consumers are much more cautious about shopping online as compared to the West. They are reluctant to divulge credit card details. The cash on delivery service has helped a lot of traditional consumers turn to online shopping," he adds.

Also, the model has unbolted the lock to a whole new customer base which hasn`t been exposed to the benefits of plastic money as yet or those with a default technological handicap.

"I`ve never understood how to pay by card online. The best I can do is use an ATM. I wish more websites had the cash on delivery option," says Sneha Anand, a school teacher.

Saloni Nangia, senior vice president (retail) at Technopak, attributes Flipkart`s success to the "superior customer experience it offers".

"Right from browsing to delivery, you can track your order. You can pre-order an unreleased book, get good prices, even the customer service is very strong. Raise any issue, it`s efficiently resolved," Nangia told IANS.

Adds Sachin Bansal: "When we started, the customer experience offered by e-commerce sites was below average. Our aim was to address this. We feel that it`s this focus on customer satisfaction and ownership of the customer experience that has worked in our favour."

The superior customer service notwithstanding, Flipkart`s biggest draw has probably been the huge discount it offers -- much to the envy of offline stores.

"I was waiting to lay my hands on Haruki Murakami`s new book `1Q84`. But it was way too expensive at Rs.1,000. But Flipkart had a flat 30 percent discount, and I got it in Rs.700," says Madhura Vishvakarma, a Delhi University student.

Though all bookstores get up to 50-60 percent discounts from publishers, the low overheads -- one of the numerous virtues of online stores -- enables Flipkart to pass on the savings in the form of discounts.

Flipkart started with books, but now deals in 12 product categories.

The company stocks nearly 11.5 million titles, "making us the largest book retailer in India. As per data, we have 80 percent share of the online book market", Sachin Bansal says.

So will this trend spell doom for offline bookstores?

"No," believes Anuj Bahri of Bahrisons.

"There`s a huge market for everyone to co-exist. Besides, Flipkart`s market is totally different, young people of 20-25 age group buy books from them. Some 80 percent of their business is chic literature. The more sensible and mature readers will always go to a bookstore," Bahri told IANS.

But Nangia of the Gurgaon-based Technopak begs to differ.

"The traditional stores are to suffer. Internationally also that has been the trend."

She believes the increasing "access to internet, more iPads, smart phones, sophisticated technology that gives 3D view of products, time poor consumers, increasing costs of real estate, will all lead to a shift to digital commerce".

But with Amazon, considered a big shark in online retail space, already knocking at India`s door, will that result in dwindling fortunes for Flipkart?

"No, India is a huge market, there is much more space for more e-retail stores," says Nangia.

Bahri, however, feels there is a palpable danger. "Flipkart works because of discounts. Amazaon can offer greater discounts as it can take bigger losses being a bigger company. That will change the dynamics," he said.

Already, there are players like Infibeam, Naaptol and Letsbuy in the market.

According to an Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) survey, the online retail market in India may grow to Rs.70 billion (over $1.30 billion) by 2015 from Rs.20 billion in 2011 as internet access improves.

Tommaso is the richest cat in the world!

New Delhi: He is probably the world’s richest cat. Four-year-old Tommaso has inherited €10 mn from his mistress who adopted him a few years ago from the streets of Rome.

Tommaso’s mistress passed away last month leaving him with flats and houses worth an estimated €10 mn scattered from Milan in the north to Calabria in the south.

In a handwritten will, Tommaso`s mistress gave her lawyers the task of looking for an animal welfare body who could take care of Tommaso and be in charge of the inheritance.

One of the lawyers, Anna Orecchioni, told a Rome daily that they considered several organisations without getting adequate guarantees of the cat`s future comfort and welfare. Meanwhile, the old lady met a fellow cat-lover and a nurse names Stefania – in a park. "Sometimes I`d go to her house so my cat could play with Tommaso," Stefania said to the daily.

As the old lady health deteriorated, Stefania began to take care of her.

"She needed someone to help her move around, shower and eat. I looked after until the end," she said.

Under the Italian law, animals cannot inherit directly. They can be only be beneficiaries if a suitable trustee is found. The elderly widow decided to make Stefania the trustee.

Tommaso`s trustee, who is now looking after him an undisclosed address outside Rome, said: "I had no idea the signora had such wealth."
