Capital City Minstrels begin Christmas season on a high note

Come Holiday season and Delhi is in for a treat from Capital City Minstrels. This year has been no exception. Throughout this week, the choir gave recitals to jam packed halls, ringing in the festivities with much joie de vivre.

Beginning with the Hungarian Cultural Centre, the Minstrels carried cheer to the India Habitat Centre and finally Epicentre Mall in Gurgaon. If what the little bird told me is right, the culmination rightly was on a high note - at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Under the baton of Fiona Hedgar-Gourlay, the choral group presented some classical pieces like Beethoven’s ‘Joyful, Joyful’ and Leontovich’s ‘Carol of the Kings’.

Soloists Marian Casey and Manvi Gupta inaugurated the show with W Gaither’s ‘What Did You Say was the Baby’s Name?’ Vanshika Mahajan and Thomas Koshy followed with ‘Who Would Imagine a King’. Koshy also sang a solo – ‘The Three Kings’.


Neeraj Devraj and Anna Stratis sang a traditional English melody – ‘What Child is this’. Tenor Neeraj also gave an outstanding solo ‘Mary Did You Know’. Anna, a British national, sang a classical English solo – ‘Coventry Carol’.

Sameer Guha, Debbie and debutant Rhea Gracias rendered the classic ‘Ave Maria’.

Tibor Kovacs, who is also the Hungarian Cultural Centre’s director, presented a traditional Hungarian piece ‘Menybol ar Angyal (Angels from Heaven)’.

The merriest among the lot, Reuben Israel, invited children on stage as he crooned ‘O Happy Day’.

The traditional French carol – ‘Angels We Have Heard on a High’ - was sung by the choir.

Among the other pieces in the repertoire presented were: ‘The Little Drummer Boy’, ‘Angel’s Carol’, ‘The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy’, ‘Tis a Wonderful’, ‘Carols Around(and Around)’, ‘The Little Light of Mine’ and ‘Christ is Born’.

Intermittently, portions were read out to the audience explaining the meaning and context of Christmas and the episodes related with it.

Supporting the choir were Nise Meruno on the piano, Rie Ona on the saxophone and Suchet Malhotra as a multi-percussionist.

The talented Nise, who started learning piano at the age of six, is also a Bass singer as well as a composer and has worked with several well-known conductors.

Besides performing with the choir, Rie Ona also plays sax with Delhi band ‘the Ska Vengers’. And Suchet is drummer with world jazz fusion band HFT. He plays the table, cajon, djembe, darbouka, bongos and a variety of native, ambient and tribal drums and percussion instruments.

The multi-national choir, combining Indian musical aficionados and expats, has been giving performances since 1994.

Fiona Hedgar-Gourlay, a British national, was performing for the last time with the choir as her stint in India now comes to an end. She has worked in music and musical theatre in the UK and Europe since 1982, performing at the Aldwych Theatre, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Richmond Theatre among others. She has also appeared on BBC and Malta TV.

The choir group this year also performed on Gandhi Jayanti in Kashmir to an enthusiastic audience. They have also been well received in schools like Sanawar and Doon, where the choir encouraged young children to take up music.

Book Review: Widhwa Ma Andhi Behen

I thought it was only I who wanted more of Salma Sultana – the expressionless news reader on DD in eighties and early nineties, who always had a red rose pinned on her long hair. But I was pleasantly surprised when Salma Sultana reappeared in the latest graphic novel ‘Widhwa Ma Andhi Behen’ (Pop Culture Publishing) by Adhiraj Singh, albeit as a cartoon.


Clearly, there are many who yearn for the yesteryear icons of the big and small screen to show up, so that we relive those glorious days of melodramatic ‘masala’ Hindi films and memorable DD serials. Perhaps, this induced young writer Adhiraj Singh to bring them alive in his comic strips for adults.


The title itself suggests that the book is a kind of spoof on Bollywood. Two timeless characters of Hindi cinema, who have appeared in many films to make the hero’s life unbearably pathetic – Widhwa Ma and Andhi Behen (based on actors Nirupa Roy and Rakhee Gulzar) are central to the graphic novel. But here, you will not find them crying inconsolably at their terrible fate, rather they take the super avatar of crime-fighting duo ensuring that all the filmy mystery-solving need of movie buffs are taken care of! In the first sequence they take up the responsibility to look for the soul of cinema which has been lost due to the advent of new age films and actors like Abhay Deol.


There are four chapters in the book, comprising adventures of Ma and Behen, each one gripping and replete with hilarious parodies and characters from films.


Widhwa Ma and Andhi Behen solve the mysterious cases of the bride-abducting Were-Yeti of Ramgarhpur. Soon after they take on the ghost of the (very alive) AK Hangal, and rescue the Indian Women`s Hockey team from a `not-a-terrorist` attack and later come to the aid of forgotten stars from DD. Ma and Behen are on the case and at the scene - usually before anything even happens!


The novel has been treated like a comic thriller as the two super women meet several unforgettable characters like Dharam Paaji, Big Boss Salman and dancing queen Helen adorned with feathers, each mouthing memorable dialogues.


The allure of unforgettable characters like the ageless AK Hangal, chirpy Baby Tabassum, Karamchand, Jaani Dushman Sanjeev Kumar, Raj-Era Jailer Asrani and superhit couple Veeru-Basanti involve the readers totally.


The caricatures of the characters by Harsho Mohan Chattoraj are quite interesting and the parodies very original. Adhiraj Singh has developed his own quirky and humorous style of writing. His first comic, ‘Uud Bilaw Manus’ was released in collaboration with artist, Abhijeet Kini, this past February at India`s First Ever Comics Convention in Delhi.


In the present day SMS world when relishing a classic is a luxury, graphic novels are quickly becoming the new fad amongst youngsters. What we once dismissed as a children’s book has been reinvented and taken a new pop culture avatar. Just like the novel was born in the eighteenth century from poetry and prose, similarly the graphic novel is the baby of the present day world. Now, the onus is on young writers like Adhiraj Singh to take the genre further and popularise it.


Lastly, after the sensational reappearance of Salma Sultana, I can’t help wishing Adhiraj Singh presents the spoof on old unforgettable ads like Cadbury and Pepsi in his next graphic novel.

Sceptical if any filmmaker will approach me: Shiney

Mumbai: Shiney Ahuja, whose career received a body blow after he was accused of raping his maid, says that he is sceptical about filmmakers approaching him for their projects.

Shiney, who made a name for himself in B-town with films like `Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi` and `Gangster`, was sentenced to seven years in prison by a Mumbai fast track court for raping his maid in 2009. The actor is currently out on bail after he challenged the sentence in the Bombay High Court.

He is now making a comeback in Bollywood with Bharat Shah`s horror film `Ghost` after a gap of three years.

On whether he would be able to score again with film-makers Shiney told reporters, "I don`t know if anybody will call me... maybe somebody will. I am waiting for the film to release. I would approach people whom I am in touch with like Sudhir Mishra, Anurag Basu and few others and love to work with them."


"From the industry everybody I have worked with, like Anurag, Sudhir and now Bharat Shah have stood by me. I don`t know what would have happened if I did not have this film," he
said.

`Ghost` would see the 37-year-old actor share screen space with actress Sayali Bhagat. The film made by producer-turned director Puja Jatinder Bedi, hits cinema houses today.

There were reports stating that even director Puja and co-actress Sayali made allegations of sexual harassment against Shiney. However, Sayali later clarified that nothing of that sort happened.

"Initially... I couldn`t explain or express my reaction. More than my reaction I was just praying to God that does not come in print tomorrow. If it comes in print, I thought I would get up early... my 60-year-old dad goes for walk. If he reads it I don`t know how much more he could take. I was very very worried about him," Shiney said.

"But then I realised that may be in the past two years several things have been written about me to which I have said that I have not done... news comes in and so does the apology, but then the damage is done," he said.

"When time is not good then there is nothing one can do. I cannot blame one person or community or family... they have gone through a lot. When things are like that one cannot do anything," Shiney concluded.

Simran Mundi: From selling film tickets to becoming a heroine

Mumbai: From selling movie tickets to starring in one, model-turned-actress Simran Kaur Mundi was keen to pursue a job in corporate world but destiny took her to modelling and drove her to Bollywood.

After finishing Biotechnology from Indore, Simran had dreams of landing up in a corporate job and never saw herself being part of the glamour world. But then Miss India happened when she was working in Mumbai. The newbie is now making her debut in Bollywood with `Jo Hum Chahein`.

"I had graduated in B-tech and wanted to do MBA. I was keen to do a 9 to 5 job but destiny had something else in store for me. It brought me to Mumbai and I got a job at Fame Adlabs for selling tickets to celebrities. Make-up gurus Bharat and Doris spotted me there and asked to participate in Femina Miss India," Simran told reporters.


She was crowned Pantaloons Femina Miss India Universe 2008 in Mumbai. After winning the prestigious title, modelling was the natural progression and she was all set and ready to leave India and go abroad for modelling, until `Jo Hum Chahein` happened.

"After Miss India I wanted to pursue modelling, my focus was not on acting and films. I have done modelling on international platform and was keen on walking ramp abroad.

But the offer for the movie came and I thought it was the perfect debut for me," Simran said.

`Jo Hum Chahein`, a romantic film directed by Pawan Gill, starring Sunny Gill and Simran in the lead, releases today.
