The most electrifying performance of Oscar night was none other than AR Rahman, who took the stage and sang his two nominated songs from Slumdog Millionaire.
Just moments before going on stage with the microphone, the prodigious composer made history by becoming the first Indian composer to win an Oscar for his score in 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Dressed in a black bandhgala (a traditional dress of India), Rahman gave a dialogue even popular Hindi films - "Mere Paas Maa Hai" - (I have mother) to thank his mother and joked a quick thanks to God in Tamil.
Then he ran backstage and reappeared moments later to perform her songs "O Saya" and "Jai Ho" with a group of dancers. Rahman sang the numbers on the left and the audience delighted with his brilliant performance.
As the double treatment, his won his second Oscar Night's "Jai Ho" which has lyrics by Gulzar. In his acceptance speech, Rahman thanked his crew and added to the end: "In my life I had to choose between love and hate. I chose love and I'm here today."
All the Kodak Theatre resounded with applause. Back home in India, a billion hearts burst with joy. "Jai Ho," Rahman.
