Currently in news for all wrong reasons, debutant actress Vedita Singh clears the air in a candid interview with Bikas Bhagat of Spicezee.com. The actress came into limelight with a raunchy video that got leaked online from her debut film ‘Bhindi Bazaar Inc.’.
Q: Since you are a newbie, why don’t you start off with a small introduction?
A: Ok…my name is Vedita Singh, born and raised in Lucknow and I have always wanted to become an actress. After pursuing professional theatre training, I transcended into Hindi films and now I make my debut with this film called ‘Bhindi Bazaar Inc.’. I have been a model and have worked on several print and TV ads and was also judged winner of Channel V’s India Hottest in 2009.
I hope people would like me once they watch my performance in ‘Bhindi Bazaar Inc.’ which also stars veterans like Deepti Naval and Kay Kay Menon.
Q: How are we going to see Vedita Singh in her debut film?
A:You will see Vedita as Shabana....A manipulative ambitious and a dark character, who to achieve her dreams can pass any limits!!! She is not a sex worker, but her body language is no less than a one.
Q: After modeling, Bollywood must have come as a bit of shock, especially after that ‘kissing’ video of yours got leaked online. Were you prepared for this?
A:Yes, the video leak was a real rude shock! I have been hearing about other actors and stars about how it has happened with them, but when it happens with you, it swings your world completely.
I was more upset and depressed about the whole issue because of my family! But my mother and sisters supported me throughout. My mom called and asked me to keep faith and said that she completely trusts me. It was a big relief. I am a little apprehensive now as I don’t want to get typecast and want to be known as a versatile actor and not as someone who only does bold roles.
Q: When did it strike you that acting was your calling?
A:Right from the days when I was doing theatre with Kadar Khan during my college days. I just loved acting and I knew that I had the talent. Theatre gives you instant recognition, so after my stint there I thought the next logical step would be to enter Bollywood and pursue my passion diligently.
Q: You play a seductress in your first film ‘Bhindi Bazaar’. That’s quite a challenging role for a debutant. What made you debut with an unconventional start?
A:My debut is an unconventional role because I knew in my heart that Shabana is a performance driven character. She is not a sex worker, but she never lets it known. It’s such a wonderfully etched character that I knew if proper justice is done to the role, it would be remembered for long. I have given my heart and soul to Shabana so now let`s see what happens.
Q: Can you talk about the bold love making scenes with your co-stars; was your family okay with your doing such things?
A:My bold scenes with both my co artists were done in a classy way. And also in the film it was required and essential. I was lucky to work with such veterans and professional artists, who made me feel comfortable and we pulled it off beautifully. I even took permission from my mother before doing the film. I explained to her the role is bold, but I would never get this big an opportunity to work with such veterans with whom I have only dreamt of working with. It was a fantastic platform; my mother agreed and supported me all throughout. It was the leak that disturbed me and upset me, but my family has supported me through it...
Q: Vedita you are a new comer, so is there truly something like casting couch? Did you face anything like this?
A:As a new comer, yes the casting couch exists, but no one is forced in our industry and ‘it’ completely depends on the individual… I have complete faith in myself, my talent...I feel I don’t have to stoop so low. My talent will get noticed and I will get good work only on the basis of my acting skills and nothing else.
Q: How did it feel sharing screen with veterans like Deepti Naval, Piyush Mishra, Kay Kay Menon. Please talk about your inspirations?
A:It was an awesome feeling working and sharing screen space with such legends…Loved it! I am fortunate and lucky to get this opportunity.
Q: Do you worry about how fame is going to affect your life?
A:Fame doesn`t scare me, but I am really not focused on that at the moment! What I am looking out for is to get as many good films where I can play different characters and prove my worth... When ‘fame’ happens, I will tackle it as other famous celebrities do!!! :).
